LEXICON
Note. When an author, or an inscription, belonging to the periods preceding the Roman period, is referred to, an asterisk is prefixed to the word under which the reference is made; as, *ἅβρα, *αἰωνόβιος, *ἀκροτελεύτιον.
Α
ἄλφα, represented in Latin by A. [Its full utterance requires the mouth to be opened as much as possible, and the breath to come up freely, that is, without any effort to change its direction. Short Α differs from long Α in degree, not in kind. Plat. Crat. 427 C. Dion. H. V, 75, 12 Αὐτῶν δὲ τῶν μακρῶν εὐφωνότατον τὸ Α, ὅταν ἐκτείνηται· λέγεται γὰρ ἀνοιγομένου τοῦ στόματος ἐπὶ πλεῖστον, καὶ τοῦ πνεύματος ἄνω φερομένου πρὸς τὸν οὐρανόν. Plut. II, 738 B. Apollon. D. Synt. 28, 27 Τοῦ Α ἡ ἐκφώνησις μεγίστη ἐστίν. Hermog. Rhet. 224, 17. Terent. 2. In the later numerical system, it stands for εἷς, one, or πρῶτος, first. With a stroke before, ͵Α, it stands for χίλιοι, thousand, or χιλιοστός, thousandth; with a diaeresis, α̈, or with a dash over it, ᾱ, for μύριοι, ten thousand. Heron Jun. 169, 4, et alibi.
3. Figuratively, the beginning, first. Apoc. 1:8; 11; 21:6; 22:13. Clem. A. I, 1365 B.

Ἀαρωνῖτις
ιδος, ἡ, (Ἀαρών) of Aaron. Philon Carp. 120 A, ράβδος.
ἄβαγνον
ου, τὸ, Macedonian, = ρόδον. Hes. Ἄβαγνα, ρόδα. Μακεδόνες.
Ἀβαδδών
ὁ, indeclinable, אבדּון, destruction personified; in Greek Ἀπολλύων. Apoc. 9:11. (See also Ἀσμοδαῖος, ὀλοθρευτής, ὀλοθρεύων, and compare the classical Ἄτη.)
ἀβαδής
ές, (βαίνω) not being able to walk. Euthal. 629 A, πῶλος.
ἀβαθής
ές, (βάθος) not deep, without depth or thickness. Onos. 2, 1, 1. Sext. 210, 24.
