But what happens when those with no formal training try to use one of these books? Inevitably they stumble upon a large amount of specialized vocabulary that impedes their understanding. This book is extensively cross-referenced to help readers find entries related to the words they look up. Any term in SMALL CAPS is a separate entry itself. Only the first occurrence of a word in a definition is marked as such. Also, because of the variations in terminology, a large number of "pointers" have been included to make sure readers find the help they need. In addition, innumerable biblical references have been included. These provide a solid basis for the definitions and refer the reader to the pertinent biblical passages for further study.

Asherah A Canaanite FERTILITY GODDESS, often associated with BAAL, whose idolatrous worship is explicitly forbidden in the Old Testament (Deut. 12:3; 16:21; 1 Kings 14:15, 23). The Israelites were instructed to tear down or burn the "Asherim," presumably wooden images or poles of some kind, perhaps tree stumps with the branches chopped off (Ex. 34:13; Deut. 12:3). ellipsis The omission of part of a sentence that is understood either from the context or from everyday vernacular. For example, the original Greek of Ephesians 5:22 does not contain a verb, but borrows it ("be subject") from the preceding verse.
 
glory Majesty, honor, greatness, or fame, usually ascribed to God (Ps. 29:1) or Jesus (John 17:1). Believers look forward to beholding this glory (Matt. 24:30; Rom. 8:18) and even sharing in it (Ps. 73:24; 1 Peter 5:1, 4).
 
minuscule A MANUSCRIPT written in small letters run together like cursive letters. The letters themselves are also referred to as minuscules, in contrast to MAJUSCULE letters. Miniscule script became the norm for manuscript production after the ninth century. The majority of surviving New Testament manuscripts are written in minuscule script. See also CURSIVE.
