The New Testament might only be small, but it is a strange and powerful book. At one level, it tells the history ofJesus and the early church; at another level (and these two go closely together, as we shall see) it is regarded by churches around the world as inspired scripture, normative for the life of faith. For this to become a reality, for the New Testament to come alive, each generation of readers, and especially teachers and preachers, needs help, particularly in the form of thorough, user-friendly, and creative introductions to Jesus, his first followers, and the literature that emerged from that movement. That is what this book is hoping to provide.
The idea for this book came during a conference in 2010. Michael Bird suggested to Philip Law of SPCK that someone ought to work with N. T. Wright and try condensing his massive and still incomplete Christian Origins and the Question of God series into a single volume, thus forming a kind of introduction to the New Testament. Law loved the idea and suggested that Bird himself should be the one to do it. Bird was reluctant at first - preferring to be the progenitor rather than the executor of the idea - but when Wright agreed to the project, Bird signed up enthusiastically. In the following nine years, Bird's idea would soar and grow in scope and expression—and not least because Wright kept producing new writings during this time. Both authors also filmed lectures throughout the Holy Land, Greece, and Rome to complement the book, while careful attention and research was given to the book's rich visual and pedagogical features.

This book, the latest to appear from pen of Tom Wright, addresses a question which has probably quietly disturbed most of us at some point: What is the relevance of the ‘middle part’ of the gospels (between the birth and crucifixion of Jesus) to what we understand to be ‘the gospel’ – forgiveness of sins, Jesus dying in our place so that we could be forgiven?
Wright surveys some of the questions asked of 'the gospels' in relation to 'the gospel'. Are they to provide proof texts for 'the gospel', such as Jesus “gave his life as a ransom for many" – Matthew 20:28. Are they just a ‘backstory’ to the death and resurrection of Jesus? Or are they mainly to demonstrate that God exists, and that Jesus was and is this God? What was the purpose of the three years earthly ministry of Jesus?

Roughly seventy years after the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, a Roman senator, mindful of his own importance and seniority, wrote to a friend about a third man, a social inferior who had got himself in trouble:
You told me you had been angry with a freedman of yours, and now he’s come to see me! He threw himself at my feet and clung on to me as though I were you. He wept a lot, he asked for a lot, though he kept quiet about a lot too. To sum it up, he made me believe that he was genuinely sorry. I think he is a changed character, because he really does feel that he did wrong.
Yes, I know you are angry; and I know, too, that you have a right to be angry. But mercy earns most praise when anger is fully justified. Once you loved this fellow, and I hope you will love him again; for the moment, it’s enough if you let yourself be placated. You can always be angry again if he deserves it, and you’ll have all the more reason if you’ve been placated now. He’s young, he’s in tears, and you have a kind heart – make all that count. Don’t torture him, and don’t torture yourself either; anger is always torture for a soft heart like yours.
I am afraid it will look as though I’m putting pressure on you, not simply making a request, if I join my prayers to his. But I’m going to do it anyway, and all the more fully and thoroughly because I’ve given him a sharp and severe talking-to, and I’ve warned him clearly that I won’t make such a request again. (This was because he needed a good fright, and I said it to him rather than to you, because it’s just possible that I shall make another request, and receive it too – always supposing it’s an appropriate thing for me to ask and for you to grant.)
